Transitioning Your Pet To A New Food

If you want to transition your pet onto a new food, then you need to take the right steps. After all, you need to make sure that you don’t upset their stomach and that you also help them to adjust as well.

Transition Slowly

If you start your pet on a new food, then your pet will probably end up with an upset stomach. This is why you need to do everything you can to transition them slowly. This process should last around two weeks. If you know that your pet has a really sensitive stomach on the other hand, then this process may take around six weeks. When you are switching your pet to a new food, you need to make sure that you choose a high-quality product that is full of vitamins and nutrients, like the one from Barking Heads.

Mix up the Food

It’s so important that you mix the food up carefully with the help of affordable pet care. Some pets will only want to eat the new food and not the old one, or vice versa. If you want to prevent this then you need to mix the food thoroughly, that way your pet is unable to choose what they want to have. To begin with, give your pet 75% of the old food, mixed with 25% of the new food. Keep on doing this until your pet’s stools are normal and firm. This will probably take around 3-4 days. When this has happened, increase the amount to 50/50.

Switching from Dry to Wet Food

If you want to switch your pet from wet food to dry food then this is great, but you do need to remember that pets are naturally more drawn to the wet counterpart. This can encourage them to eat the food faster than they should and it can also promote an upset stomach as well. One way for you to avoid this would be for you to mix the dry food with the wet food as a transition period. This will help their stomach to adjust and it will also make it way easier for them to not get overwhelmed with the change.

Picking the New Food

Choosing a new food can be difficult. To begin with, you have to make sure that the food is of a high standard of quality. Just because you have heard that a food is good in the past, doesn’t mean that it actually is. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to make sure that it contains meat as a primary ingredient. Pet foods that contain vegetables are also a great choice. You do however need to make sure that you stay away from pet food that contains by-products such as soy or even corn. The main reason for this is because they are filler ingredients and they are far less nutritional when compared.

So transitioning your pet to a new food is relatively easy- the secret is introducing the new food gradually to see how they adjust to the new diet.
