Borobudur is located in a city called Magelang, about an hour drive from Yogyakarta. There are many accommodation options in Yogyakarta, which is why most people live there. However, it is no secret that people like the scenery around Borobudur. In addition to Borobudur Temple, Magelang also has a beautiful waterfall called Kedung Kayang. This waterfall is a hidden gem for tourists. In addition to the waterfall, you should also visit the Setumbu hill, where you can watch the sunrise over the Borobudur temple.
Besides Mount Setumbu, Magelang also has a mountain called Mount Tidar, you can climb the mountain to breathe fresh air along the way. Another highlight of Magelang is the food! This is my comment on some local delicacies.
1. Sop Senerek by Warung Nasi Sop Senerek “Pak Parto”
You can say that Sop Senerek is one of Magelang signature dish. It is not as famous as Tahu Kupat or Kupat Tahu though, however, just by looking at the visual, you can tell this soup looks tasty. Its taste is similar to the beef rib soup you can easily find in Jakarta or other big cities in Indonesia. The main ingredient of this soupis red beans, and is completed with diced beef, spinach, carrots and light broth. This soup is worth a try if you visit Magelang. Warung Nasi Sop Senerek “Pak Parto” is located in Rejo Mulyo shopping complex, Ikhlas street, blok C-12.
2. Ice Cream by Mahkota Bakery
This is an old-fashioned ice cream, just like the ice cream you can find in Ragusa, Jakarta. Though the ice cream tastes good, actually there is nothing special about this ice cream. But!, since it is an old-fashioned ice cream, it can be a comfort snack for those who want to reminisce about the old times which make it special for some people. Besides the ice cream, we also had a bite of their layer cake (kue lapis), which was even more memorable. So if you want to know how the old-fashioned ice cream in Indonesia tastes, you can come to Mahkota Bakeries for its ice cream and the layered cake. Mahkota Bakery is located in Jend. 3. Tahu Kupat in Tahu Kupat “Pelopor”
Tahu Kupat is one of the best foods in Magelang. Tahu Kupat consists of fried cubes tofu, kupat, chopped cabbage, bean sprouts, and some fried onion and celery. The sauce itself is made from peanuts, onion, and sweet soy sauce. Some of people consider Tahu Kupat “Pelopor” to be the best place to try Tahu Kupat.
By the way, Tahu is tofu, while Kupat or Ketupat is a rice cake, which is made from rice cooked in a braided bag of coconut leaves. Besides visiting Borobudur, you can also play at Kedung Kayang Waterfall, have a day of food exploration, and climb Tidar Mountain. This Tahu Kupat by “Pelopor” is located in front of Blabak Station.
