London Olympics 2012 has started on 27th of July 2012. The Olympic Games today is perhaps the greatest social force in the world.” But what are the Olympic Games? Why are they held every four years? Where did they suddenly spring out of? The ancient Greeks used to celebrate their Gods and Goddesses by taking part in athletic games held annually at Olympia, Greece. These games and the medals won were then dedicated by the athletes to the Gods. It was undoubtedly the most celebrated sporting event of the ancient world where men from all over ancient Greece gathered to compete for honor and glory of their home cities.

London Olympics 2012 back in 393 A.D

Although the games were halted in 393 A.D by the Emperor Theodosius, they found a new life in the 19th century when the Olympic Movement was founded by Baron  Pierre de Coubertin. The purpose of this movement was to usher a new Golden age of brotherhood and fraternity of mankind by bringing people of different races, nationalities, religions and political ideologies together in a Single International Sporting Event, where one competes to bring Glory to their Nation and build bonds with other cultures.

In words of Baron Coubertin “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well .In the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.”

Notable events in modern history of the games include the 1936 Berlin Olympics, when the Head of the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler, gave a medal to an African- American Jessie Owens. The Nazis considered Black people to be racially inferior to them .In 1976 Olympics, almost all of Africa boycotted the Olympics in protest of the apartheid regime of South Africa. In 2008, an unknown Man from Jamaica went on to become the Fastest Man in History and was declared the best athlete of the 2008 Olympics. The History of Olympics is filled with stories where men and women fought against all odds to make the impossible into possible.

London is the luckiest country to host this largest games event for the third time. Millions of people will get aided with this stunning activity. People will have fun watching above 30 games played between more then 200 nations. Currently China is leading the contest with 12 medals. Congrats to their great effort in London Olympics 2012.
